Lim Sophornthida

Deputy Head, Socioeconomics Division, Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), Cambodia

Sophornthida commenced her career at CARDI in 2008 soon after graduating with a Bachelor of Agronomy Science from the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Phnom Penh. In 2017 she was awarded a scholarship to study at Kangwon National University in Korea where she successfully completed her Masters degree.

As a child of high-school teacher parents, Sophorthida values education and is motivated to continue learning and researching in order to contribute to the betterment of her institute and country. Specifically, Sophornthida aims to positively influence agricultural development through her research. 

In her current role Sophornthida takes a systems approach to research that emphases participation from the design phase all the way through to evaluation and impact assessment. An important aspect of her role is the integration of gender and economic studies into agricultural research programs. Sophorthida also conducts extensive field work, regularly travelling to rural and remote regions to gather data.

Sophornthida is passionate about the role of women’s empowerment in agriculture. She considers gender equity measures vital for policymakers and development partners concerned with devising more effective interventions to increase agricultural productivity and enhance household and national economic growth.

CAMBODIA: Food Security & Gender

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security in Cambodia is just beginning to be understood and the potential for a food crisis in the coming months is very real. Meryl Williams Fellows Dr Sonnthida Sambath and Sophornthida Lim have been awarded an ACIAR Research Support Facility grant to examine the impact of the pandemic on access to vegetables in Cambodia.
