Prof Paul A. Iji

Professor and Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) at Fiji National University

Paul A. Iji is a Professor of Animal Science and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry at the Fiji National University (FNU), Suva, Fiji.  He studied in Australia (PhD and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education), Scotland (MSc) and Nigeria (BSc Honours, First Class). 

Professor Iji has been involved in research and tertiary education since 1987, working first in Nigeria, South Africa, Australia and currently Fiji.  His main area of research is commercial poultry science, with a specialization in gastrointestinal physiology. He has also been involved in research and teaching on other animal species, including sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, rural poultry and ostrich. 

Prof Iji has graduated 24 PhD, 9 Masters and 2 Honours students and currently supervises one PhD student, at his former University in Australia.  He also supervised 5 post-doctoral research fellows and hosted a number of visitors in his research group at the University of New England, and is connected to international adjunct staff members linked to his College in Fiji. 

Prof Iji has been a consultant to companies involved in the poultry and feed industries and is on the editorial board of some scientific journals, along with his role as a reviewer for other journals.  He is the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the new South Pacific Journal of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.  He has published more than 140 journal papers, and presented over 170 conference papers, 27 of them on invitation. 

His research is highly cited and he has a large following on LinkedIn, ResearchGate and other academic social media.  He is also the author of Writing and Publishing Your Research, a booklet aimed at developing the writing skills and publication record of early-career researchers. 

His career goals are to contribute to the development of the agricultural industries through direct conduct of research, research management and student training.
